went to Salerno gallery with Nathan to display my works for tomorrow, opening night.
i was a bit worried because of my bub but thankfully he slept and behaved quite good.
I could display my pieces quickly during his nap...

well, my original idea for one of the neckpieces was putting lots of felt which was cut in leave shape and having blackened 925 silver & bronze...so pretty much really big & chunky exhibition neckpiece...realistically not wearable...

All of sudden, it didn't work at all. when i realised it 3 days ago before the exhibition (i know, crazy...) i had to make quick decision whether i would take this work out completely! or...change the way making & display...and now it became an installation work showing 'autumn' by wilted & old leaves & branches...with same sorts of materials...i am quite happy with the (prompt) result. if you wonder? come and see the exhibition, 10 girls. 10 colours. opening tomorrow @ 6pm. :D

i really don't have much time to make stuff because of my bub. i have to do after nathan sleeps, say around 10pm? and sadly i can't stay late cause i'm deadly TIRED!!

it has been so long i wouldn't able to even LOG ON my blog since June because of my baby, Nathan. oh...dear, but at least im enjoying parenting and falling in love with him...

the venue & date for 10girls. 10colours are set up and that is at Salerno Gallery in Glebe from the 18th of Oct till the 6th of Nov.

also our grant application has been successful which means that our life makes so much easier to create the new works without financial problem.

a bit of cut & bleeding are common as a jeweller.
i had a little bleeding from two fingers from left, one from right. i say to myself, 'welcome back to workshop.'
oh, and a dirty dirty fingers & nails... no nails...
i completed three brooches for tenmoregirls' first photoshoot and hopefully it turns out good. i am planning to make two more neck pieces... i wish i can manage well with my baby.

well, i think it was successful...
i have two balconies in my house, one has nice timber deck on the floor & the other one is tile floor. of course i've chosen the one with tiles on the floor and made everything around me tidy & clean.
i only used one incense and i've burned enough materials to start with...i guess.
now it is just the matter of how to attach them together in simple/nice looking manner for brooch...

i think i have an idea! well, not today though...

i have researched how to burn the paper SAFELY... there are a few options and i like using the incense sticks among them...which i feel this is the most safest way...
i bought some different colours and types of papers today from Eckersley's and i am quite ready to burn my papers after finding good spot in my house. hopefully i don't burn the house. :(

concept development about the colour BROWN

When i first heard that my colour is brown, my first instinct was 'wood'. simply thought,'let's use WOOD as a main material'.
i goggled the colour 'brown' and it is the colour of a mixture of red, orange, rose or yellow with black or grey. Common connotations are soil, Africa, coffee, chocolate, maple leaf, skin, earth, thanksgiving, stone, caramel, wood, hair or eye...etc.

i was quite interested in coffee & chocolate and maybe their fragrance...maybe i can make some little containers which have lots of holes so that smell comes out???? or simply coffee/chocolate shaped wearable pieces out of wax carving???then STUCK. ok...what about hair or eye?...maybe cultural backgrounds' differences? then STUCK...
i came back to WOOD and their annual ring (time ring). i wanted to apply this fact to human. Individual character can be the wrinkles, the line of palm, finger prints or scar... then i kinda of realised that i already designed/made once before with the similar concept...

i felt a bit boring so i seriously needed a break to empty my brain for a while thinking colour brown...i changed the way of thinking colour 'brown' and started to think what/how or when the colour change to brown...i also had to consider my current condition, pregnancy, for this exhibition using simple techiniques with home friendly tools and equipments...

we often think or say that brown is the colour of autumn...
when leaves get old, they get really dry, brown, fragile & old looking...
when flowers are wilted, they also become dry, fragile & brownish...
then it continues to the other factors...
when paper gets burned, colour changes to brown...
when bright colour fabric or any other materials get dirty, it becomes yellowish brown dirty looking... etc etc etc....
endless elements were stuck into my idea...and i liked it.

First experiment was the reticulations which is well associated with the fact, burning paper - melting metal. i could achieve the satified pieces when i was still at work in Mar fortunately. i initially wanted to use the reticulated sterling silver as a part of pendant for the neckpiece but i might make it as a brooch...never know until the end... then casting for the shapes of leaves & flowers are still on process...they will be two or three neckpieces...i was playing around with the string the other day for the neck part...and i hope i find the way soon....soonish...

our first photoshot is scheduled on the 5th of May... my baby due date is the 27th in same month. i don't want to be freak out yet... if anyone has a idea for beautiful sting work or twining (not weaving though), please let me know.

i went to palloys todoay to pick up my casting stuff. i was kinda surprised by the unsuccessful result of fake leaves. they said it was too thin. Only part they could make was the branch part...looks like bird's foot.

anyway, i am quite happy with other stuff and i might collect more actual old leaves, flowers or twigs...for casting... and i really look like a crazy person keep looking down anxiously when walking...(with big belly!)

To express the wilted leaves based on my colour BROWN concept, i am thinking to cast these things as bronze and make neckpieces.

There are many ways to make patterns on metal like etching, rolling mill texturing, patinating, engraving or stamping etc.

Among these techniques, i've done a bit of experiments with reticulation on 925 silver as i thought this is well corresponded with colour BROWN; burned effect.

One of decorative effects on metal, surface movement when it's heated after seven times of annealing. it's sensational...

this year, the theme of tenmoregirls' 4th exhibition is 'colour'.
tencolours are red, pink, yellow, orange, blue, green, purple, brown, white and black. And my colour is BROWN.

there is a bit of story behind this though....
Due to my personal circumstance...pregnancy, i decided to drop out from this exhibition and it was really hard decision. then i felt alright for a while but sad very soon. so i asked girls if i could be back again and gladly i became one of tenmoregirls again. :)

i am enjoying thinking about my colour, BROWN, nowadays and feeling excited this year's exhibition already.

some time last year,..

shirley, one of my classmates, asked me & hub to draw our dreaming spinning top on the postcards and return to her in Japan.

yes, this exhibition was what happens when you ask your family/friends to draw their dream spinning top and she got many postcards returned by her family & friends to create their spinning tops & show her works in Sydney.

this exhibition is such a great exhibition which you must visit and i loved my red&white onion spinning top and my hubby's black&white cone spinning (that i drew.,,actually, haha).

it had been so long since i posted last time, which means i was totally busy or lazy. but i was still visiting some exhibitions of JOD fellars...

the one that i visited in Dec with Andrea was 'a matter of scale' created by Carol Faulkner, a 2010 JOD award receipient. I remember this time was the most busiest time at Enmore and i felt really exhausted but wanted to support Carol.

i went there with Andrea and met lot's of Enmore crews, of course, Catherine & Ragnar...etc. It was great to see Carol's final works as i've seen her process throughout the year and...it was quite amazing to see everthing displayed so beautifully in perfect manner.

finally time has come and i would say it was successful. Visitors seem a kind of mixture of different backgrounds, culturally or work field...definately broad age range & fair gender, too.

i've been stressed a lot for this exhibition as i had really intense time for myself for past few months and thought i wouldn't be able to complete my pieces at all. Luckily, i made it so i am very happy with my result but i will definately do better next year.(as i always promise to myself.)

some may be already aware of that how strange when you finally made and displayed works that you've spent for about a year... to be honest, i've started to think my theme for this exhibition when i heard from bernadette last year in Oct. and of course developed and refined my 'house' concept for a long time. Initially my idea got started from when i began to look around houses for myself and realised that there are some features, textures & shapes aren't shown in Korea where i am from. Typical house structure in Australia like terraces isn't existing in Korea and i found it's quite interesting aspect. then i thought about my home country's architect and decided to have three neckpieces which are inspired by architecture factors from different area; jeju island, sydney (metropolitan road where i walk mostly) and seoul korea.

1. jeju island is located on the south sea of Korea, where is still rustic. there are still many old style houses using straw for thatched house and stone for fence. I connected 925 silver roundy thinging representing stones with silk cord (straw) by twining 2 different colours of silk cord.

2. daily walk is directly inspired by my everyday life walking down metropolitan road in Enmore where i used to study and work currently.

It has a bit of hill and there are lots of old terraces which has various types of door, fence, windows, different colours for everthing and shapes and roof...etc. i used these diversity onto my neckpieces using 4 different kinds of wood and created 40 several front decorations with hand engraving and just simple skills.

3. skyscrapers fetures of typical building shapes in Seoul Korea; a high apartment in common, skyscrapers in city, planned street and skyline. This piece is configured on these elements out of brass, 925 silver & rubber.

this year, tenmoregirls' 3rd annual exhibition, girls around the world, starts on this Thursday 9 Sep from the 6pm to 8pm at Gaffa Gallery, 281 Clarence St. Sydney CBD.

i was a kind of unprepared, disorganised, worried, freaked out and stressful...cause this time was such a bad timing...which i didn't realised when we scheduled and made decision our exhibition...
on same week which is in this Sat. there is an open day, an annual big event in design centre enmore, and my father in law was here in Sydney for about two weeks that meant i couldn't do anything...so it was intensively hectic....-.-;;;

but thanx (for myself) i finally made it today anyway for the exhibition...hopefully everything goes alright and after the opening night, i just need to come back to my normal pace, relax...and enjoy...

there is an exhibition, emerging sydney jewellers showcase, at Atrium in JamFactory, Adelaide SA.

i had this opportunity through lovely lisa and feel really lucky to be part of this great exhibition.

I couldn't go to the opening night which was last Fri but Bernadette went there and took pictures for me. thanx bmt. :)

my recent works are ALL inspired by house...bricks, roof, door & windows etc. i am really addicted it now. more coming in Sep for the exhibition, 'girls around the world', opening the 9th of Sep at Gaffa.

i have made geometric ranges, brooches, with sterling silver & ebony in 2008 for Young Blood.
i really liked it and have been thinking to develop that geometric form to be more specific shapes like houses, stairs, doors and post boxes...etc. My idea & designs tend to be motivated by my routine outside of my work on weekends inspecting houses since 2009.

It is quite interesting how i got influenced by my weekly routine and i will also apply this theme to the other exhibition coming in Sep, Girls Around the World, too.

more details coming sooner...or not. still thinking...

anyway, i made a final decision for Jamfactory and am feeling quite relieved now even though there are heaps things waiting....to be cut, engraved, soldered & polished.....

i visited gaffa's new venue in the heart of Sydney's CBD on 281 Clarence St.
Space was quite amazing. There are cafe, retail shops and Zoe's lovely office on ground floor,

3 gallery spaces are on first level and studios are at the top level.

i could see upper level if i look at above and next gallery space though windows, too.

Gallery spaces were a bit narrow than i thought but looked sophisticated, cozy & creative.

I can't wait to having a group show, 'girls around the world' here in gaffa in Sep!!!

by looking at my childhood pictures, i found my mom's hat were in many images and she still kept it. It was more than 35years old now and of course one of her favourite belongings.

these wall pieces were minimalised & conceptualised by base metal with gold plated, patinated & flocked and silk thread stitched to express its shape, colour & pattern.

ginkgo tree is one of my favourite creatures in terms of its own colour and the way that expresses seasonal change, yellow all over the tree & falling on the ground.

as soon as i was thinking of making something this year for girls against gold, i was imagining goldish ginkgo leaves falling from the sky like snow and i would like to create something out of it.

this picturesque pieces are 100 pieces of ginkgo leaves and one brooch is with 24ct yellow gold,(keum boo, Korean traditional technique).

inspired by the colourful ball that i was playing when i was about 3-4 years old. although i don't remember at that moment, i guess the ball must be one of my toys that i always played and liked. three colours, red, blue & yellow were the main elements to explore this work.

there was a lovely exhibition last thursday the 1st of Oct at metalab. Although i was super stressed for my slow making process and all happenings related to our exhibition, i couldn't wait to see Mel's new works. i went there with bernadette & lisa and we were super-quick visitors though. haha

It was great to see Mel's new range of beautiful pieces and nice to meet Lauren, too.

omg. i've been so busy for preparing design centre expo, open day & organising the catalogue for girls against gold, an exhibition by tenmoregirls coming up very soon in Oct!!!

open day went well i guess and i am glad it's over.

another event from design centre enmore is tomorrow, a fundraising auction allegory for exhibition design.

girls against gold is so much stressful as i feel i am so behind but i am at least very happy as we got so many sponsors, grants and promos approved this year! we are doing great this time! wow

i went there today afternoon and there were so many people queing in front of powerhouse museum. Our jewellery and objects design's stall looked amazing. Current second year students (crimson 2) were doing great job for part of their subjects, professional practice.

this is second time visiting Melbourne. i went there in 2004 and actually didn't like it.

but i really wanted to go there again, visit galleries/museums & relax rather than doing activities such as going great ocean road and seeing penguins...etc.

i've been seriously wanting to visit gallery funaki when i found her during my study in 2002.

It was great to look at different pieces made by jewellers from other states/countries and also good to see Korean jewellers, of course.

I was almost stunned by all works and felt embarassing about my skills/effort and mostly passion.

ten more girls was originally created by 2007 graduates in 2008. Ten female past and current students/staffs of the Jewellery and Object Design from the Design Centre Enmore had the first exhibition, girls for boys, on 28 Aug 2008 at Gaffa Gallery.

Now, ten more girls' second grand exhibtion 2009 title is called "girls against gold" and participants 2009 are; Majella Beck, Jenny Daskalakis, Lisa Furno, A Mi Kim, Nikki Majajas, Jasmine Matus, Radka Passianova, Natasha Marcus Taylor, Bernadette Trainor, Janis Valdivia.

Now, it's time to confess that i've started to go market regularly selling my jewellery. I've been art & design market at Kirribilli twice and once at Glebe market.

Look at my small table!!! Photo was taken on first day of market. it's actually my little dress table and It was really funny looking as other stalls had at least 2m width & of course suitable tent & chair. My chair was so uncomfortable to sit all day long under sun.

My tiny tiny little table looked a bit poor but kind of cute at the same time...haha

I borrowed a proper table on second time but table looked a bit empty then. haha

hu~ i am still learning.

i actually had a good day yesterday as customers who looked at my stall last month and who i remember them too as we had conversation came back to me and bought some pieces.

It was glad that they still remember me and even said to me that they were thinking of my pieces over a month and came to the market again although they weren't sure whether i was coming or not. isn't that great?

i had to go Pablo Fanque yesterday to see Francesca so i saw these interesting works there.

These are not really my style or stuff that i am creating, but it was very fun pieces using mixture of old, new and found objects. It also reminds me of Pierre's works. don't know why...maybe because of found objects & colour similarity?

anyway, good to see another nice works this week and refresh myself.

i visited bondi market to find out what they sell, how other stalls display & what price ranges are...it was quite full on! and now i understood why i couldn't get in there yet! there were many many many stalls like fashion items and vintage things, home wares...also baby stuff, too. and of course jwelleries are everywhere....!!!

It was serious windy day and most stall holders looked a bit stressful as i am certainly aware of that stress...for my experiences...it is very intense work...! under the SUN...and WIND....

i want to try here...

coming ANZAC day reminds me of last emerging designers exhibition at Paddington.

It's already almost a year ago now...wow...i would say time's flying.

I was full of passion for making jewellery at that time and very ambitious to be a jewellery practitioner for sure! i have entered total 9 group exhibitions/competitions in 2008 and put pieces at young blood market & rocks markets, too.

last year was really intense...i think...

always there were somethings going on after one by one...

but i feel a bit lazy this year ...

where is all my energy?

Sonya Scott, one of 2007 graduate & JOD award recipient 2008, presented her works made during 2008. Her first solo exhibition ‘Improvisation’ started on 5 March at Metalab!!

I almost couldn't make it but i made visiting her first exhibition after all.

It was quite crowed and there were so many great pieces !

Exhibition of Jewellery Trade and Engraving from Design Centre Enmore

it's only for one night, which was yesterday 12 Dec from 6:30 to 9:30pm.

went there with my husband about 7:30 and met lots of people...

I actually never been any trade exhibition before but i feel it's quite successful...

I am happy with my engraving stuff made last 1.5 years. Attending class every Tue. from 6-9pm after my hard work was quite tough...but i would say...i could do it because of Stephen's support, Tracey's kindness and great companies like Hinomi & Francisca... :)

I was so impressed with all works made by students...love their creativities, imagination, experiments....it was really successful exhibition i would say...and congratulations to all!

good to see Lisa's truck necklace ranges & Mel's new ranges out of black threads.

and had a coffee at cafe next to Pablo Fanque cause i arrived before 6pm.

met Mel in front of cafe and she looked a bit nervous. :)

i was very impressed by all of her works. actually shocked!!

Her works were all so~~~adorable, delicate & picturesque.

I envy her artistic spirit and experimental challenge.

loved her pink project.

she really makes me go forward.

i went to LOADED opening after work. i arrived a bit early so actually could look more closely and leisurely. every piece was containing its own stories and display was very simple, but strong enough to show each work clearly.

i was very glad to see Robin's picture & his mundane ( as quoted as Sean's) tools with shiny bits.

I was wonder if he would visit the gallery today, but of course, he didn't.

He never turn up in any occasions.

i like him. :)

Robin Blau was one of my favourite teachers who i still respect and miss

even though i wouldn't be able to talk to with him more than 3mins

as i feel so nervous in front him.

objects made in 2004 at stage 3

First project was for Sean/Catherine's and created 3xsmall objects and 3xbigger vessels inspired by my memory triggers like ring, box, letters which were simplified as above.

i was really fascinated by light from the end of stage 2 and tried 3 x lights at stage 3 in Robin's.

It was quite hard and stressful as making light was needed to consider not only design but also lighting component. so what i needed to was pretty much every parts had to be really acurate and also lighting system!!!!!

I remember Ki was a technical officer at this time and he really helped me a lot for setting lighting components and making chains...he still often says about chain...haha

sadly, i don't have many images that i made in 2004...i assuming maybe i was really excited visiting Korea afterwards...i didn't think much i reckon. oops.

the second one for 'red' project is inspired by rose.

i went the opening night at Gaffa gallery just after international students expo at Ultimo.

It is quite interesting exhibition as it shows a bit of mixture of materials, skills and designs between contemporary and traditional jewellery/objects.

it was very crowded and there were many pieces by people from Design Centre Enmore.

Always good to see works done by poeple who i know. :D

I went to Jewellery Fair 2008 at Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre in Darling Harbour yesterday. I finally met many our suppliers' contact people, Jocelyn, Trevor, Joe, Ian etc. It was great to meet them as we always spoke over the phone more than 1 year.
There were many things that i would like to buy but i controlled myself very well and just ended up to buy some gemstones. :) I wish to buy pearls as well but couldn't buy as there were too many customers and there weren't any staffs who could help me. they seemed too much hectic. i rather go their shop some day.
good to meet people, great to buy some materials, happy to imagine making using them.

Young Blood Designers Market + Design Boom 2008

i went there on 15 August after work.

There were lots of interesting pieces, especially at upstairs "Sydney Design Festival 2008".

All designers were from overseas like Hong Kong, America, Japan & Korea etc.

in Young Blood Designers Market was downstairs and our Design Centre Enmore stall was well displayed by 2nd year students for their professional practice project.

All pieces were made by 5 past graduates, Natalie Klave, Nikki Majajas, Kimberly Williams, Sonya Scott & A mi Kim, myself. :)

i stayed at workshop after work till about 9pm everyday.

I went Gallery Red Opening with Mel after work on Fri. It was very crowded and there were food & drinks which i didn't expect!!! :)
It was great opportunity to present my works to people who are from various backgrounds and different design fields.

i went NCA Art Exhibition with my husband after work on 21 May 2008.

There were lots of paintings, photographies and some textiles but only few jewelleries.

It was good to see different field's works like painting, photographies & fashion/textiles though.

but maybe...i am assuming this was the first year they selected jewellery?

they were supposed to display jewellery pieces on the white table as far as i know.

oh my god. my pieces were inside of glass bowl on the old browny table???

what on earth were pebbles doing there???

i wonder what they thought when they did display.

but. i am at least happy about my acheivement.

I was researching and looking for different materials for my works and found LEGO as i want to make something connected/stacked together when it's all finished.

so my first idea is "Puzzle" and second idea is using "LEGO".

I thought it's very clever & amazing idea and was happy for last few days.

but i heard from Lisa that there are already few people making with LEGO

and what i was surprised most is, today, when i went to make_do opening and saw Mel's neckpiece.

i definitely need more materials research.

but i will still use LEGO creatively.

i had such a great experience on last long ANZAC weekends.
It was a very big achivement and opportunity to launch into the real world.

I met Rhonda, Kimberly, Liesl, Hayley & Gena who are all from our school and

their being made me feel reasurred.
But i wouldn't be able to stay there without my crews, Catherine, Marina, Majella, Lisa & Oli.

visited the balmain market yesterday. Here, balmain market, is very special place for me as i used to be here every sat in 2005. I still remember how hard it was but it remains as really precious experience.

i really liked here because it was quite peaceful market compared to others and good for sales, too. but what i felt yesterday was shocking and pathetic. The number of stalls were seriously shrank more than half and stuffs they were selling were nothing interesting and didn't tempt me at all. Although old stalls that i was familiar were still in same spots, there were many newish stalls having copied products (with much cheaper price) held by Chinese. It was terribly sad.

I found exactly same jewellery that belinda made selling $15 but it was $10.

maybe that's why Belinda is not going balmain market any more.

Jewellery is so easy to be copied...especially beads fashion jewellery.

Too many jewellery shops with similar products and lower quality

but cheaper price.

kirribilli market

i went to Kirribilli market on 22 March. It was pretty big and busy as they only open once a month, which is on the 4th of Saturday. There were lots of jewellery stores as usual but still. not really impressive. as they were more like bead making rather than metal smithing.

i met Belinda who i worked with in 2005 for Balmain market and i found she still pushes herself into her own business so hard. She goes around pretty much every market like balmain, bondi, kirribilli, mosman and sometimes other casual local markets, and she was still there at the same spot in Kirribilli!!! Although what i tend to make is different to her style and technique, i need to learn her passion and patience dedicating her small business.

I went to Glebe market on last Saturday. It was so different to Paddington market.
There were heaps of jewellery stalls but nothing interesting, impressive or inspiring to me.
It wasn't really handmade by silversmithing jeweller and also not unique, special, timeless or one-off products but they were trendy and affordable so that it seems busier than Paddington.

I reckon Glebe market is good to enjoy and buy cheap goods when people go out on weekends with their friends or family and spend time there, whereas Paddington would be beneficial for emerging artists, designers and jewellers to start their business and good showcases to be recognised by customers or suppliers. The place people actually visit to buy certain products is Paddington.

Jewellery design staffs organised a secret dinner for Catherine's appointment, being a Head Teacher officially. I sent emails to everyone, chose the venue & booked. It was actually quite exciting to make someone happy.
